ORCHARD TOWERS

Is she still the Grande Dame of Orchard Road?

The History of Orchard Towers

When Orchard Towers was built in 1975, it was meant as a retail and office hub, with two buildings linked by an overhead bridge. However, the opening of “music bars” such as Ipanema and Naughty Girl marked the start of a chain of seedy establishments and businesses, which gave Orchard Towers (also famously described as the “Four Floors of Whores”) the tarnished reputation is has today.

Orchard Towers clings on to its function as a retail or office style building in the day. However, by night we witness a 180 degree change where it morphs  into a place where bars and clubs thrive, and prostitutes are a common sight.

We chose Orchard Towers as we felt that it would be interesting to look closer at one of Singapore’s few red light districts that many avoid bringing up, and explore the contrasts that this establishment has with the tamer aspects of Singapore.
